Shopping for Auto Insurance Is No Different Than Shopping for a Car – Industry Insurance

There’s nothing like driving a new car. Most people do extensive research before they buy a car. The internet provides endless articles from experts like Consumer Reports, car magazines, Auto Trader and the list goes on and on. I can remember that when I bought my new car a few months ago, I spent days looking at web sites to make certain that I was getting the best deal and that the car suited my needs. Shopping for auto insurance shouldn’t be any different from shopping for the car. Just like makes and models of cars, there are many different varieties of auto insurance available. It is humbling as a seasoned insurance agent, that my clients trust my judgement to let me essentially pick the policy for them. I certainly wouldn’t let a car insurance salesperson make that buying decision for me!! I am not advocating that you shouldn’t trust your insurance agent because as an industry, insurance agents are responsible and generally consumer advocates. What I am suggesting is that you take a few minutes to understand the auto insurance policy that you’re buying. What should you look for? Here’s a punch list you can use.1. What’s the liability limit? If the limit is a single combined limit then you want the highest liability limit that the company offers. Minimum limits are useless. The single most important reason to buy auto insurance, is to protect YOU from YOUR negligence. YOU need to be protected from a mistake you can make when driving like hitting another car or hitting a person. In that case, the last thing you want is minimum limits.2. What’s your limit for uninsured and underinsured motorist protection. This goes the same with the limits just discussed. YOU need to be protected from all the irresponsible drivers who either don’t have car insurance or don’t have enough car insurance! These two items should help you get started in evaluating car insurance I’ll talk about more things you should know in my next article
